The Wildly Surprising Truth About Beach Pollution
A casual stroll on the shores of Samphire Hoe, Devon, quickly turned into a shocking revelation about the state of our beloved beaches.
A few weeks back, me, Thor, and a few of our friends set out to make small fundraiser and go clean a beach somewhere on a coast nearby. As we all live in London we chose Samphire Hoe, near Devon, which was within easy access.
What started as a relaxing day out transformed into an eye-opening beach clean that left us with overflowing bags of plastic waste, fishing nets, and random trash. In just 1-2 hours, our small group collected more than eight people could carry, and we only covered a fraction of a small beach!
🎥 Here is a short reel from the day:
The Harsh Reality of Beach Pollution: A Global Phenomenon
We’d like to think that our Samphire Hoe beach clean was an isolated incident, but the truth is, beach pollution is a widespread problem, not only in the UK but around the world. According to Surfers Against Sewage, a UK-based environmental charity, over 8 million metric tonnes of plastic enter our oceans each year. That's equivalent to a rubbish truckload every minute! These shocking numbers demonstrate that our throwaway culture is taking a massive toll on the environment, and our beaches are paying the price.

Tips and Tricks for Reducing Waste and Saving Our Beaches
Beach pollution might seem like an insurmountable problem, but it's not all doom and gloom. By making small, conscious changes in our daily lives, we can help alleviate the issue. Here are a few simple tips to get you started:
Ditch single-use plastics: Invest in reusable items like water bottles, shopping bags, and coffee cups. This small switch can make a big difference in the long run.
Recycle responsibly: Familiarise yourself with your local recycling guidelines and ensure you're disposing of waste correctly. Proper recycling not only helps reduce pollution but also conserves valuable resources.
Support eco-friendly brands: Vote with your wallet by choosing to buy from companies committed to sustainability and responsible waste management practices.
Spread the word: Raise awareness about the issue of beach pollution by talking to your friends, family, and colleagues. The more people know about the problem, the more likely they are to take action.
Participate in local clean-up efforts: Keep an eye out for beach clean events in your area or join organisations like Surfers Against Sewage to get involved in their initiatives.
Reduce, reuse, repurpose: Before tossing an item in the trash, consider if it can be reused or repurposed. This mentality can help minimise waste and promote a more circular economy.
Encourage businesses to go green: As a consumer, your voice matters. Let your favourite brands and local businesses know that you value eco-friendly practices and encourage them to adopt more sustainable measures.

Our Samphire Hoe beach clean experience was a wake-up call that pushed us to reevaluate our relationship with the environment and our responsibilities as a business.
